At Cugó Gran Macina Malta, we believe that a true sense of luxury extends beyond our stunning hotel; it’s also about fostering meaningful connections with our local community. We are committed to supporting the people, culture, and environment around us, ensuring that our actions contribute positively to the growth and sustainability of Cugó Gran Macina Malta and the wider Maltese community.
Cugó Gran Macina Malta, located by St. Michael’s Bastion, is a significant historical structure in Senglea, Malta reflecting the rich heritage of the area. Originally a ship mast fitting mechanism, or “macchina,” from the 17th century, the building underwent various transformations over time.
As the current tenants, we are committed to preserving this iconic structure while maintaining its historical significance. In recent years, we have revitalized the building into a luxurious hotel, blending modern design with the original charm of the Macina. The integration of the Macina and its annex, connected by a panoramic lift and bridge, has brought new life to the space. During restoration, much of the original stonework and historic crane elements were preserved, with modern additions, such as black apertures, enhancing the building’s visual appeal. Structural repairs, including the reconstruction of war-damaged vaults and the installation of reinforced concrete slabs, further stabilized the structure.
Beyond our role as tenants, we are also deeply committed to supporting and preserving the surrounding community. We understand that true luxury is about fostering meaningful connections, not just offering exceptional accommodations. Our efforts go beyond the hotel itself, aiming to positively impact the local culture, heritage, and environment. We have initiated several local projects and partnerships to give back to the community that has embraced us.
Situated in a vibrant, close-knit area, we recognize the importance of supporting the well-being and development of the Maltese community. Our goal is to create a space where guests can enjoy the beauty of Malta while contributing to the ongoing preservation and growth of the area. As we work to preserve the building and its history, we are also dedicated to ensuring that Cugó Gran Macina Malta and the wider community continue to thrive for future generations.
We believe that community involvement is key to a sustainable and thriving future, and that’s why we have initiated several local projects and partnerships to give back to the place that has welcomed us with open arms.
Supporting local crafts and artisans: We collaborate with local artisans and craftsmen to showcase their work within our hotel. Whether it’s handmade furniture, locally produced artwork, or traditional textiles, we aim to support and celebrate the talented people of Malta. By providing a platform for their creations, we help preserve and promote Malta’s rich cultural heritage.
Partnering with local farmers and producers: We are committed to sourcing fresh, locally grown ingredients for our restaurant – The Little Bastion, allowing guests to experience the true flavours of Malta. By partnering with local farmers and producers, we support the island’s agricultural community and contribute to the local economy, ensuring sustainability and the highest quality ingredients for our dishes.
Environmental stewardship: We take our responsibility to the environment seriously. Our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint extend beyond our hotel operations. From waste reduction and energy efficiency to supporting clean-up initiatives and local environmental charities, we strive to make a positive impact on the Maltese environment.
Supporting local charities: Cugó Gran Macina Malta is proud to partner with various local charities and organizations, offering our support through donations, volunteer work, and hosting fundraising events. We believe in giving back to those in need, and through our community partnerships, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families throughout Malta.
Cultural engagement: We host events that celebrate local culture, including traditional Maltese music, art exhibitions, and heritage workshops. By embracing and showcasing the cultural richness of Malta, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation of its unique history and traditions, creating a bridge between visitors and the local community.
We invite our guests to join us in our mission to support the wider Maltese community. Whether it’s through visiting local businesses, enjoying the fruits of local agriculture, or participating in our charitable efforts, there are many ways to make a positive impact. At Cugó Gran Macina Malta, we believe that luxury is not only about creating exceptional experiences – it’s about creating a lasting, positive impact on the community around us.
By supporting the local people, businesses, and culture, we all contribute to a more sustainable, vibrant, and connected future. Thank you for being part of this journey with us!
